Conference on National Affairs  (CONA) June 26 - July 5, 2024 in North Carolina

The Conference on National Affairs offers unusual opportunities for a young person to do research in the area of National and International concern; to organize this information into a documented proposal; to engage in intensive discussion; and to debate these proposals with understanding young people from other states.

Young people who have participated in the YMCA Youth Conference on National Affairs are unanimous in their belief that this experience makes a vital contribution in helping young citizens to learn more about the democratic form of Government.

There will also be one afternoon for recreation at the conference site. Delegates can choose from mountain climbing, team sports, tennis, swimming, or trips. The mountains provide an interesting setting to rock on the porch and visit with friends and for spiritual inspiration.

The Oregon Delegation will also travel with the Washington Delegation as the Cascadia Delegation for a Pre-CONA experience.  The Oregon delegation will depart from Portland Airport (PDX) on the night of June 26 for a nonstop red-eye flight under the supervision of YMCA Youth and Government Program Committee Chair Josh Gwin.  With arrival in Charlotte, NC early in the morning on June 27, the delegates will enjoy two days and two nights before heading by bus to YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly for the conference June 29 - July 5, with return nonstop travel on July 5 from Charlotte (CLT) to Portland (PDX).  Air fare has been arranged by the YMCA and American Airlines Group Travel and is included in the event fee. 

Pre-CONA information sessions, proposal writing, and preparation workshops will be held via zoom and attendance is required. 

Partial financial assistance is available for all participants with demonstrated financial need, although all Pre-CONA entertainment and meal expenses must be paid for by the participant.   For more information, contact Marisa Fink, YMCA State Director, at marisa@oregonymcas.org.
